Marlborough Wine Tours FAQs
Tasting fees, lunch, pickups, ferries, cruise ships, bikes and children. Ready for your Marlborough Wine booking? The answers below settle most of what you need to know first.
Two answers matter more than the rest. First, who pays at the cellar door: the van tours' fares carry the tasting fees, while on a bike you often pay them yourself. Then where your day starts: Blenheim and Renwick, a few minutes from the vines, or Picton, the ferry and cruise-ship town 20 to 30 minutes north. Every tour card says both.
Do I need a ticket to visit Marlborough's wineries?
No. There is no gate and no entry ticket to Marlborough wine country, and each cellar door either charges its own tasting fee or pours free. The ticket you buy is a tour fare, and on the van tours that fare pays the tasting fees for you.
Are tasting fees included in a Marlborough wine tour price?
On the guided van tours, yes: their fares carry the cellar-door tasting fees. On the bike hire they are not included, and many cellar doors charge around NZ$10. The guided bike day pays the morning's tastings only, and the self-guided bike day's listing does not say.
Is lunch included on Marlborough wine tours?
Usually not. Most full days stop at a winery restaurant where you pay for your own lunch, and the afternoon half-days have no lunch stop, so eat first. The Gourmet Gold day, the Marlborough Tour Company full day and its wine-and-cruise day put lunch in the fare.
Do the tours pick up from my hotel?
Most do, free, from central Blenheim and Renwick. Picton pickups are part of some tours and an extra on others: Hop n Grape quotes NZ$20-55 per person, paid on the day. The shore excursions meet the ship's shuttle at the Picton i-SITE.
Can I do a Marlborough wine tour from Picton?
Yes. Several tours pick up in central Picton, and the shore excursions are built around cruise-ship times. Picton is 20 to 30 minutes from the vineyards, so a Picton pickup starts earlier or costs more than one in Blenheim.
I'm arriving on a cruise ship. Which tour should I book?
A shore excursion. They meet the free ship shuttle at the Picton i-SITE and are timed to bring you back before the ship sails. Some Blenheim tours say plainly that their timings do not suit ship passengers.
Can I join a tour straight off the Wellington ferry?
Sometimes. Marlborough Wine Tours' afternoon tour says the Interislander arriving at 12.15pm is too late, while the Bluebridge arriving at 11.45am should make it. The crossing takes about three and a half hours.
How many wineries will I visit?
Three or four on a half-day and four to six on a full day. Wine Marlborough says a typical day takes in three to five cellar doors, with each tasting taking around 40 to 60 minutes.
Can I cycle between the wineries?
Yes. The bike bases on Rapaura Road rent step-through bikes, e-bikes and tandems with a map, and over a dozen wineries sit within 3 km of the base. You pay the tasting fees yourself unless your listing says otherwise.
Is there a minimum age?
The drinking age is 18, and several tours set 18 as their minimum; one asks for passport ID if you are 18 to 25. The bike days rent kids' bikes, and the private day has infant seats and room for a pushchair.
Can I cancel my booking?
Every tour here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start. If the operator cancels for weather or too few travellers, you are offered another date or a full refund.
When is the best time for a Marlborough wine tour?
Summer and autumn: long, dry days for the bikes, and the harvest in the vineyards in autumn. In winter Wine Marlborough says some tasting rooms close, and some tours move their pickups earlier.
What wines is Marlborough known for?
Sauvignon Blanc first: NZ Winegrowers says it put New Zealand on the international wine stage in the 1980s. The region also makes Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and sparkling wine, over 25 varieties in all.
Is there a private Marlborough wine tour?
Yes. Jimmy's Classic Marlborough Wine Tours runs a private day for your group only, from your Blenheim hotel or campervan site, with standard tasting fees in the fare. Other operators say to contact them for a private booking.
Can I see the Marlborough Sounds on a wine tour?
Yes, on the wine-and-cruise day: tastings in the morning, then an afternoon cruise on Queen Charlotte Sound with salmon and greenshell mussels. The cruise depends on the weather, and in winter the day runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays only.
How far is Picton from Blenheim?
About 20 to 30 minutes by road. Wine Marlborough puts it at 20 minutes and NZ Winegrowers calls it a 30-minute drive.
Can I fly into Marlborough?
Yes. Marlborough Airport, Blenheim's airport, is a 30-minute flight from Wellington, and Wine Marlborough says three airlines fly direct to the region.
Do I need to book ahead?
Yes in summer. Most tours cap their groups between 6 and 15, and one full-day tour warns that once its Picton pickup is full, that slot simply disappears from the booking calendar.
What should I bring?
Passport ID if you are 18 to 25, sunscreen, a hat and a warm layer. On a bike day add comfortable clothes for riding, and on a van tour keep to one small bag, because some tours take no suitcases.
Can I buy wine to take home?
Yes, though the bottles are never in the fare. Wine Marlborough says many cellar doors ship within New Zealand and overseas, and the self-guided bike day collects the bottles you buy along the trail.
Are the tours wheelchair accessible?
No listing here says it is. Sounds Connection's Picton tour takes a collapsible wheelchair if someone can help the traveller board, so ask the operator before you book.
What if it rains on a bike tour?
On the guided bike day the operator switches the morning to a van tour at no extra cost. On the self-guided days you ride in the weather, so check the forecast and pack a layer.
Is the Marlborough Wine & Food Festival on?
No. Wine Marlborough has put the festival on hold; the 2027 date had been set for 13 February, but tickets never went on sale.
What is SauvBlancDay?
The first Friday in May, when Sauvignon Blanc drinkers around the world raise a glass to the grape. Wine Marlborough marks it every year.
Is Cloudy Bay on the tours?
On the Gourmet Gold day, whose fare includes a visit and its tasting. Some Hop n Grape days say they do not visit Cloudy Bay, Fromm or Hans Herzog, so check the itinerary if one winery matters to you.
Which part of Marlborough do the tours visit?
Mostly the Wairau Valley around Renwick and Rapaura, with stops in the Southern Valleys. The Awatere Valley lies further south and is rarely on the itineraries.
Do the tours visit a chocolate factory?
Several do. The Makana Confections chocolate factory is a 15-minute stop on many itineraries, free on some and on request on others.
Can a large group book?
A group bigger than the tour's cap books as a private tour. Marlborough Tour Company takes larger groups by arrangement, and Hop n Grape points cruise groups to its private tours.
Is the wine-and-cruise day a small group?
The morning is, with up to 15 in the van. In the afternoon you join the Seafood Odyssea cruise, which the operator warns can carry up to 40 people in peak season.
Can cruise passengers join a regular tour?
Usually not: several Blenheim tours say their timings do not suit ship passengers. Book a shore excursion from the Picton i-SITE, or check with the operator first.
Where do the bike tours start?
At The Vines Village, 193 Rapaura Road, or with a pickup from Blenheim or Renwick. Bike Hire Marlborough also has a base at 42 Alfred Street in central Blenheim.
