The vines cover the valley floor, but Marlborough reaches north to the sea arms of the Sounds and has a museum of old aircraft at the edge of Blenheim. If you are booking Marlborough Wine guided tours, you have a half-day or a whole day to fill around them. Here is how to fill it.
Everything below sits within a short drive of Blenheim or on Picton's waterfront. The opening times come from each place's own website. Check them again before you go, because they change with the season.
An afternoon wine tour collects you around midday. A morning tour has you back by the middle of the afternoon. Either way, you have half a day free, and the table shows what fits in it.

Stay in Blenheim and book a morning at Omaka before an afternoon in the vines. Stay in Picton and spend your morning on the waterfront. The afternoon tours from Picton leave at 12.30pm, or 12pm from May to October.
The Marlborough Sounds are the sea arms north of the vines, and Queen Charlotte Sound is the one Picton sits on. You see it from the ferry, and you can see it on a wine day too.
The wine-and-cruise day gives you about three hours of tastings in the morning and three hours on the water in the afternoon. You eat a light lunch, then salmon and greenshell mussels on board. In peak season the boat can carry up to 40 people, because your group joins another. It costs from $181 per person.
Two things to know. The afternoon cruise is subject to the weather, and in winter 2026 the day ran on Wednesdays and Saturdays only. If the cruise is what you want, book early and keep a spare day.
The track runs 73.5 km through the Sounds, between Queen Charlotte Sound and Kenepuru Sound. It follows old bridle paths, and it has been open to walkers since 1983. You can walk it or ride it on a mountain bike.
Most people walk a section, not the whole track. A single day on it fits well before or after a wine day. Bring boots and water.
The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre sits at Omaka, on the edge of Blenheim. It holds rare aircraft from both world wars and tells the stories of the people who flew them.
Prices are on the centre's own ticket page. Give it a morning; it is indoors, so it is a good choice for a wet day.
Makana Confections makes its chocolates by hand in a factory on the Marlborough wine trail. It is set up like a cellar door. You watch the chocolates being made, taste a few samples, and buy what you like. It opens daily from 9am to 5.30pm.
You may not need to go on your own. Several van days stop here, among them the Hop n Grape days and Jade Tours' full day, and the shore excursions from Picton stop for about 15 minutes. Each tour card on the homepage says whether its day includes the stop.
Picton is where your ferry or ship comes in, and where the shore excursions start. If you have an hour or a morning before your tour, the waterfront has enough to fill it.

A wine tour is an adult day. Several van tours are for adults only, and so is one of the shore excursions. So plan the children's day first, and fit the tasting around it.
