Is a wine day worth it from the ship?

Why Blenheim tours often say no
Read the small print on a Blenheim full day and you often find the same line: not suitable for cruise passengers. The reason is timing. Those days start at 9.45 or 10am in Blenheim, collect from hotels, and end when they end. A ship cannot wait, so the operators send you to a shore excursion instead. Even the wine-and-cruise day on Queen Charlotte Sound warns that its return may not meet a ship's callback time.
A shore excursion works the other way round. It starts where the shuttle drops you, and the operator plans the day backwards from your all-aboard. That is what you pay for.
From the gangway to the i-SITE

The times below follow Jade's usual 9.30am start. A ship that docks later shifts every line, and the operator tells you the new start when you book.
- Before 9am, off the ship. Join an early shuttle; the ride to the i-SITE takes about ten minutes.
- Just after 9am, the i-SITE car park. Find your van and your guide.
- 9.30am, south to the vineyards. Blenheim's wine country is 20 to 30 minutes away.
- The first cellar doors. Tastings in the fare, and a walk into the vines at one or more.
- Lunch. A stop at a winery, paid on the day; one group had a charcuterie board at the third winery.
- The chocolate factory. Samples in the fare, boxes for sale.
- Four to six hours after you left. Back at the i-SITE, and onto the shuttle for the ship.

What you will love about the day
It is small. The shore excursions run in minivans of ten to thirteen guests, so the cellar-door staff can talk to the whole group at once. One couple's group of ten, all strangers at 9am, were friends by the end.
It is varied. You taste Sauvignon Blanc where it made its name, and usually Pinot Noir and something rarer too, at four award-winning cellar doors. A boutique chocolate factory breaks up the pours on most of them. And you see the Wairau Valley itself, flat, sunny and lined with vines.
What to prepare for
- Lunch is not in the fare. It is a stop at a winery, paid on the day. Carry a card.
- Adults only. The minimum age on Jade's day is 18, and Discovery takes adults only; families go private.
- Two to book. Jade needs at least two people per booking.
- Not for wheelchairs. Jade's day is not wheelchair accessible; ask the others before you book.
